Clinical Specialty:
Sports Concussion, sports medicine, general musculoskeletal care and non-operative orthopedics, high School & collegiate athletics, recreational & competitive sports, performance sports (gymnastics, dance, cheer)

Clinical Services:

  • Diagnosis and non-operative care for musculoskeletal & sports injuries
  • Care of sports-related & general medical needs of athletes
  • Pre-participation physical examination
  • Special Populations: Youth, adult, elderly, and disabled athletes
  • Counseling regarding: Steroid/supplement abuse, eating disorders in athletes, injury prevention
  • Coordination of care with other members of the sports medicine team, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, personal physicians, and other members of the medical & surgical specialties.
  • Exercise prescription
  • Non-operative fracture care
  • Expertise in the care of the injured gymnast

Background:
Dr. Kruse received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He later attended medical school at the University of California, San Diego and did his internship and residency in family medicine at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Following residency, Dr. Kruse completed fellowship training in sports medicine at Memorial Hospital of South Bend, affiliated with the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Kruse is an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery & Family Medicine. He serves as the Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine at UC Irvine and assumed the role of Medical Director for UC Irvine's Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center on January 1, 2010.

Dr. Nitin Bhatia and Dr. Thay Lee were presented with the prestigious "Harold and Nancy Willingham Award for Outstanding Research Paper" at the meeting of the Western Orthopaedic Association this year. Drs. Bhatia and Lee presented their paper, entitled "Biomechanical Evaluation of Short-Segment Posterior Instrumentation with Crosslinks In An Unstable Human Burst Fracture Model".

The WOA, with more than 1,700 members, held it's 73rd annual meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Bhatia, an orthopaedic surgeon and Dr. Lee, a Ph.D Research Career Scientist/Biomedical Engineer, are on staff at University of California at Irvine.
